Torpedoes fixtures for 2019 AWL season

THE 2019 Australian Water Polo League season gets underway this weekend but the UWA Torpedoes have to wait another week before beginning their campaign on the road with the gruelling NSW week-long tour.

The OVO AWL replaced the National Water Polo League last season and now is getting ready for its second instalment with the action to begin in the opening weekend of February.

But for the Torpedoes, their season gets underway the following week with the six games in six days against three different NSW-based opponents.

The Torpedoes’ first appearance in Western Australia is the derby at Bicton Pool on Saturday March 2 before the first home game at HBF Stadium takes place five days later against the Balmain Tigers.

While the Torpedoes play their first nine games away from home, with eight of those interstate, it’s a big finish with the last nine matches in home pools. All but two of those games will be held at HBF Stadium rather than the usual UWA Aquatic Centre.

It’s set to be an exciting season for the Torpedoes with new-look squads in both men’s and women’s competitions.

It all gets underway for UWA on Tuesday February 5 against the Sydney University Lions. That’s sure to be a big test first up with Sydney Uni the defending men’s champions and having won the title in the women’s competition in 2017.

Next up on Wednesday is the Drummoyne Devils before the Torpedoes then take on the Cronulla Sharks on Thursday. It’s then the return fixtures against Drummoyne on Friday, Cronulla on Saturday and Sydney Uni on Sunday.

The Torps remain on the road the following weekend, heading to Adelaide to play the Adelaide Jets on both Saturday and Sunday.

The Torpedoes then play closer to home in the derby against Fremantle on Saturday March 2 and then finally on Thursday March 7 is the first home game for 2019, against the Balmain Tigers at HBF Stadium. The Torps then also play the Tigers on Saturday at HBF Stadium.

Next up in a Friday and Sunday double is UNSW Wests with the Killer Whales reigning women’s premiers and the Magpies men having won the title the season before.

It’s the Torpedoes turn to host Fremantle in a derby at HBF Stadium on Saturday March 23 before finishing the season with a Friday-Sunday double against the Queensland Thunder, and on Thursday-Saturday against the Hunter Hurricanes to end the season.
