Torpedoes fall to Tigers in home opener

THE UWA Torpedoes didn’t quite have the opening to their season at home they were after on Thursday night with the Balmain Tigers claiming wins at HBF Stadium in both the women’s and men’s match ups.

The Torpedoes opened the 2019 OVO Australian Water Polo League season on the road, playing five games in Sydney, two in Adelaide and then last Saturday night in the derby against Fremantle at Bicton Pool.

It was time for the first home game for 2019 on Thursday night with the Torpedoes playing host to the Tigers at HBF Stadium.

The results weren’t quite what the Torpedoes were after starting with the Balmain women winning 13-7. The men’s match was then a close and physical affair all the way, but the Tigers also prevailed 10-6.

Both teams now back up against on Saturday afternoon at HBF Stadium again. The women’s match begins at 2.30pm with the men’s game to follow at 4pm.

POSITIVES COME OUT OF DERBY LOSSES FOR TORPS

It took until Round 6 of the season, but the Torpedoes women got to hit the home pool on Thursday night but it was always going to be a significant test against a strong Balmain outfit.

And Balmain came out impressively scoring the only three goals of the first quarter, with the first two of those to Rowie Webster.

The Tigers then went up 5-0 with Webster scoring again and Caroline Anderson adding another to start the second quarter. UWA got on the board thanks Heather Laird who in her second match in the national league scored her first goal.

Balmain still went into half-time leading 6-1 and that became 7-1 early in the third quarter before the Torpedoes got one back through Tayla Walsh, who soon received her third exclusion to end her night early.

UWA did get another goal before three quarter-time thanks to Sam Shead and also scored four times in the last quarter, two of those to Shead and another Madi Rigo and one to Glenda Morgan.

Balmain still ended up winning 13-7 with Rowie Webster scoring five goals to be the star of the game.

Sam Shead finished with three goals for the Torpedoes with one each to Tayla Walsh, Heather Laird, Madi Rigo and Glenda Morgan.

It was then time for the men’s contest at HBF Stadium with the Torps starting well scoring first courtesy of captain Nick Hughes.

Balmain quickly answered back with the next two goals of the first term but to start the second, UWA drew level thanks to Canadian import Devon Thumwood.

The Tigers again drew ahead through Connor Martin but Gaelan Patterson responded in kind for UWA.

But Balmain was up 4-3 heading into half-time before the first two goals of the second half went the ways of the Torpedoes through Hughes and Patterson as the home team went ahead 5-4.

It wouldn’t last long with Balmain up 7-5 by three quarter-time and then 9-5 early in the last period before winning 10-6.

Ian Calpain, Nick Godfrey, Connor Martin, Nonat Galeev and Marco Spampinato all scored two goals for Balmain.

Gaelan Patterson and Nick Hughes scored twice for UWA with one goal each to Devon Thumwood and Tom Powell.
