Torpedoes advance to semi finals to face Sydney Uni

THE UWA Torpedoes delivered a terrific elimination final performance on Friday to beat the Brisbane Barracudas to set up a semi-final on Saturday with the Sydney University Lions.

The Torpedoes men are the defending National Water Polo League champions and qualified for the 2017 finals in fifth position setting up Friday’s elimination final with the Barracudas at Sydney’s Pymble Ladies College Aquatic Centre.

Despite the Barracudas taking a 6-5 lead into half-time, the Torpedoes responded strongly with the only two goals of the third term including a stunning full-pool bomb from Luke Quinlivan.

From there, the Torpedoes went on to win 9-7 to advance to Saturday semi-final against the Lions with a spot in Sunday’s grand final on the line.

The Torpedoes headed to Sydney with a big task against Billy Miller, Rhys Howden and the Barracudas with the two teams fighting to stay alive.

It only took 40 seconds for UWA to score first thanks to Lach Pethick but Brisbane responded soon after in a high-scoring opening quarter.

Andrew Ford put the Torpedoes bac in front before the Barracudas responded once more, but then two goals in a minute to captain Nick Hughes and UWA went up 4-2 and still led 4-3 by quarter-time.

But Brisbane started the second period strongly with the opening three goals before Ford got one back for the Torpedoes just before half-time to cut the Barracudas advantage to 6-5.

The Torpedoes responded in the third quarter firstly drawing level and then going ahead on the buzzer with a remarkable shot from one end of the pool to other from Quinlivan.

It went in off the bar and took the air right out of the Barracudas and gave the Torpedoes the boost that it could be their day.

UWA went up 8-6 then with a big goal to start the fourth quarter and went on to win 9-7 to advance to the semi-final against the Sydney Uni Lions.

Hughes, Tom Powell and Ford all scored two goals apiece for the Torpedoes in the win over the Barracudas.
