Torpedoes remain unbeaten after wins in Melbourne

C2HBR7RVIAA8ad0_1THE UWA Torpedoes took their National Water Polo League show on the road to Melbourne on Saturday and both the men’s and women’s teams continued their unbeaten starts to 2017 with wins over the Barbarians at Xavier College in Kew.

The Torpedoes opened their season with games against the Adelaide Jets at The Hangar on Thursday and Friday evenings. Both the UWA women’s and men’s teams came away with victories in all four encounters leaving them undefeated heading to Melbourne.

The weekend games were originally fixtured to be against the Victorian Seals at the Melbourne Spots & Aquatic Centre. But with the Seals withdrawing from the NWPL on Wednesday, they have now been replaced by a Water Polo Australia-backed Barbarians team.

That saw the Torpedoes do battle with them on Saturday at Kew’s Xavier College.

The Torpedoes went on to remain unbeaten with the women beating the Barbarians 8-7 before the men went on to record the 15-10 victory. [Read more…]

Torpedoes open season with two games each in Adelaide, Melbourne

O'Leary, DaynaTHE UWA Torpedoes open their 2017 National Water Polo League season with four road games in as many days this week starting with two matches in Adelaide before two in Melbourne.

The Torpedoes men and women’s teams will be on the road for the first half of the NWPL season for 2017 before finally returning home to UWA Aquatic Centre for the opening home matches against the UTS Balmain Tigers on Thursday February 23.

The run on the road for the Torpedoes begins this week with two games to start off with in Adelaide against the Jets before then travelling to Melbourne for the weekend to tackle the newly formed Barbarians.

Double road win for Torpedoes in Adelaide

15965988_10154081701095966_2305052935990906072_nBOTH UWA Torpedoes women’s and men’s teams have opened the 2017 National Water Polo League in impressive fashion on the road recording wins over the Adelaide Jets at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Thursday night.

The Torpedoes might have a challenging opening to the 2017 season with the opening 11 matches all on the road starting with the four games in the opening round starting with two in Adelaide and two in Melbourne.

Things got off to the perfect start on Thursday night with the women’s match beginning proceedings at The Hangar. The Torpedoes went on to beat the Jets 9-7.

It was then on to the men’s contest for the evening with the Torpedoes beginning their premiership defence in style as UWA ran out 13-2 victors. [Read more…]

Torpedoes welcome Swiss import Vesselina Velikova for NWPL season

Velikova, VesselinaTHE UWA Torpedoes women’s team have been boosted with the signing of Swiss import Vesselina Velikova for the 2017 National Water Polo League season.

Velikova arrives at the Torpedoes fresh off spending a semester at Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada where she became a key player as centre-forward in the Gaels varsity club team, which just recently completed their season hosting the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship at their home pool in Kingston.

Velikova was on a student exchange to Queen’s University coming from Horgen, Switzerland and her goal was to continue to study to become an English teacher. [Read more…]

UWA Torpedoes season opens on the road next week


THE 2017 National Water Polo League begins next week with the UWA Torpedoes spending the first half of the season on the road with the men out to defend their championship and women looking to advance further into the finals.

The UWA Torpedoes men are fresh off winning the 2016 National Water Polo League championship. Many of the team then took part in the recently completed Water Polo WA Premier League where the UWA City Beach Bears were victorious in the grand final over the Melville Sharks.

Not only that, but another Torpedoes veteran Brett McGhie was named the fairest and best player in the Men’s Premier League for his outstanding performances with Triton.

Meanwhile, the Torpedoes women last season also made the NWPL finals series only going down to the Cronulla Sharks in the elimination final. [Read more…]

Who, when and where of NWPL 2017

As we are welcoming some new Supporters to our UWA Torpedoes tribe, we will be including some posts on “good to know” info for the NWPL.

Here is the who, when and where overview….

Who plays in the NWPL?

The Australian National Water Polo League (NWPL) has 12 representative clubs. These clubs are based in:

  • Brisbanewpa_logo_portrait_648x390
  • Newcastle
  • Sydney
  • Melbourne
  • Adelaide
  • Fremantle
  • Perth  – the mighty UWA Torpedoes!

Each club has a Women’s and a Men’s team.

When and where are NWPL games played?

The NWPL season runs for 4 months. Matches are scheduled on most weekends starting in January and running through to April.

  • The UWA Torpedoes have 12 matches in Perth, 11 home games and 1 at Bicton against the Fremantle Mariners.
  • The Torps pack their bags for a lot of travel over the 4 months – they play 6 matches in Sydney,  4 in Brisbane, and head to Melbourne and Adelaide for 2

What is the NWPL?

The National Water Polo League (NWPL), is Australia’s premier water polo competition.

The NWPL provides important competition opportunities for national squad members as well as the next generation of Australian water polo talent. It is truly a national competition, featuring teams from five states across Australia.12797772_438474009682133_1405623234_n

  • The NWPL is the ‘water polo equivalent’ of the AFL or the NBL
  • The UWA Torpedoes are the water polo equivalent of the Eagles, Perth Fever or the Wildcats
  • NWPL provides the basis for selection to Australian junior and senior teams for World Championships and the Olympics
  • The NWPL is just one level below International competition

In 2017, UWA Torpedoes will enter a team in both the men’s and the women’s National Water Polo League competition.
