Six games in six days for Torpedoes in Sydney

THE UWA Torpedoes undertake the toughest week of the National Water Polo League with six games in six games in Sydney, but both the men’s and women’s outfits are looking to set up their season ahead of 11 straight home matches.

The Torpedoes head to Sydney in Round 5 of the 2017 NWPL season to take part in games against the Drummoyne Devils on Tuesday and Friday; Sydney University Lions on Wednesday and Saturday; and the Cronulla Sharks on Thursday and Sunday.

Between the UWA men’s and women’s teams they have suffered just the one defeat so far this NWPL season in 10 combined matches all away from home.

Now the six games this week in Sydney will be the final trip away for the Torpedoes until the finals with them to return home following it to play the first off 11 straight matches at UWA Aquatic Centre against the UTS Balmain Tigers on Thursday February 23. [Read more…]

Torpedoes women look to rebound strongly on Sydney trip

UWA Torpedoes women’s coach Scott Schweickle is confident his team can rebound strongly from a disappointing loss to the Fremantle Marlins and they will need to as they embark on the road trip to Sydney this week.

The Torpedoes women opened the season with four road wins, two in Adelaide against the Jets and two in Melbourne against the Barbarians, before taking on the Fremantle Marlins at Bicton Pool.

The result was an emphatic 16-4 win for the Marlins handing the Torpedoes their first loss of the 2017 National Water Polo League season leading into last weekend off, and now the road trip to Sydney this week with six games over the course of six days. [Read more…]

Torpedoes split the Western Derby with Fremantle

THE UWA Torpedoes took on Fremantle in the first western derby of 2017 at Bicton Pool on Saturday night with the women going down to the Marlins while the defending champion men remained unbeaten proving too good for the Mariners.

The Torpedoes women and men started the 2017 National Water Polo League season with four victories apiece on the road firstly with two against the Adelaide Jets, and then two against the Water Polo Australia Barbarians.

Torpedoes tackle Fremantle in NWPL on Saturday night

THE UWA Torpedoes are back in action this Saturday night and playing in Perth for the first time in 2017 taking on the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners in the western derby at Bicton Pool.

The Torpedoes men and women both started their seasons with four games on the road a fortnight ago, two against the Adelaide Jets and two against the Water Polo Australia-backed Barbarians, going on to win all of those encounters.

There was then a week off leading into this Saturday night’s clash with the Fremantle teams at Bicton Pool.

It will be part of a packed day at Bicton Pool starting with two Women’s Premier League matches with the Melville Marlins taking on the UWA City Beach Bears before the North Coast Phoenix battles the Dolphins.

New coach happy with young Torpedoes women so far

THE UWA Torpedoes women have come into the 2017 National Water Polo League season with a younger team than he expected, but new coach Scott Schweickle has liked what he has seen so far but knows the toughest challenges are yet to come.

Schweickle has arrived to coach the women’s Torpedoes in 2017 with plenty of experience behind him in a variety of roles in water polo in both Sydney and Brisbane.

On top of being national development manager at Water Polo Australia for eight years, Schweickle has plenty of coaching experience having been at the helm of the Sydney Northern Beaches Breakers and Queensland Breakers national league team. [Read more…]

Torpedoes look to continue momentum after 4-0 start

THE UWA Torpedoes women’s team couldn’t have started better under new coach Scott Schweickle with four road wins and he is looking forward to continuing that momentum on Saturday night at Bicton Pool against the Fremantle Marlins.

The Torpedoes women opened their season with Round 1 victories on the road against the Adelaide Jets 9-7 and 12-6, before then beating the Water Polo Australia-backed Victorian Barbarians 12-7 and 8-7 on the weekend.

With the week off to recover from that road trip, the Torpedoes are back in action this Saturday night against Fremantle at Bicton Pool. [Read more…]

Torpedoes unbeaten after eight road games in four days

THE UWA Torpedoes completed their four-day road trip to open the National Water Polo League 2017 season and both the women’s and men’s teams remained unbeaten recording two more wins over the Barbarians at Kew’s Xavier College on Sunday.

The Torpedoes season got underway on Thursday and Friday evenings in Adelaide where the women’s and men’s teams won each of their matches against the Jets at The Hangar in impressive fashion.

It was then on to Melbourne where the Torpedoes were originally meant to play the Victorian Seals. Those plans changed when they withdrew from the NWPL for 2017 on Wednesday, but Water Polo Australia helped organise a Barbarians team that will play in their place for the season.

That saw the Torpedoes take them on at Xavier College on Saturday again with both UWA teams recording wins.

It was back to the same venue on Sunday morning with the women opening proceedings with a 12-7 victory over the Barbarians. The Torpedoes men then completed the unbeaten road trip to start the season beating the Barbarians 11-8. [Read more…]

Torpedoes remain unbeaten after wins in Melbourne

C2HBR7RVIAA8ad0_1THE UWA Torpedoes took their National Water Polo League show on the road to Melbourne on Saturday and both the men’s and women’s teams continued their unbeaten starts to 2017 with wins over the Barbarians at Xavier College in Kew.

The Torpedoes opened their season with games against the Adelaide Jets at The Hangar on Thursday and Friday evenings. Both the UWA women’s and men’s teams came away with victories in all four encounters leaving them undefeated heading to Melbourne.

The weekend games were originally fixtured to be against the Victorian Seals at the Melbourne Spots & Aquatic Centre. But with the Seals withdrawing from the NWPL on Wednesday, they have now been replaced by a Water Polo Australia-backed Barbarians team.

That saw the Torpedoes do battle with them on Saturday at Kew’s Xavier College.

The Torpedoes went on to remain unbeaten with the women beating the Barbarians 8-7 before the men went on to record the 15-10 victory. [Read more…]

Torpedoes open season with two games each in Adelaide, Melbourne

O'Leary, DaynaTHE UWA Torpedoes open their 2017 National Water Polo League season with four road games in as many days this week starting with two matches in Adelaide before two in Melbourne.

The Torpedoes men and women’s teams will be on the road for the first half of the NWPL season for 2017 before finally returning home to UWA Aquatic Centre for the opening home matches against the UTS Balmain Tigers on Thursday February 23.

The run on the road for the Torpedoes begins this week with two games to start off with in Adelaide against the Jets before then travelling to Melbourne for the weekend to tackle the newly formed Barbarians.

Double road win for Torpedoes in Adelaide

15965988_10154081701095966_2305052935990906072_nBOTH UWA Torpedoes women’s and men’s teams have opened the 2017 National Water Polo League in impressive fashion on the road recording wins over the Adelaide Jets at the South Australian Aquatic and Leisure Centre on Thursday night.

The Torpedoes might have a challenging opening to the 2017 season with the opening 11 matches all on the road starting with the four games in the opening round starting with two in Adelaide and two in Melbourne.

Things got off to the perfect start on Thursday night with the women’s match beginning proceedings at The Hangar. The Torpedoes went on to beat the Jets 9-7.

It was then on to the men’s contest for the evening with the Torpedoes beginning their premiership defence in style as UWA ran out 13-2 victors. [Read more…]
