Torps finish Brisbane trip with penalty shootout triumphs

IT was an eventful trip to Brisbane for the UWA Torpedoes in Round 9 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League culminating in both the women and men’s teams winning on Sunday in penalty shootouts against the Brisbane Barracudas.

Following the three-week break during the middle of the 2018 OVO AWL season, the Torpedoes returned to action in Round 10 of the competition by making the trip to Brisbane to play the four games across four days at Fortitude Valley Pool.

The road trip began on Thursday night against the Queensland Breakers. The Torpedoes women went down with the Breakers prevailing 13-9 before the UWA won a nail-bitter, winning 8-7. [Read more…]

Torpedoes back in action with trip to Brisbane

THE UWA Torpedoes are back in action following a two-week break in the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League taking on the Queensland Breakers and Brisbane Barracudas twice each over four days on a road trip to Brisbane.

The Torpedoes men and women last played in the OVO AWL when hosting the Sydney Uni Lions in a double-header at UWA Aquatic Centre back on March 16 and 18.

Those games saw the Torpedoes women’s lose on the Friday night 13-8 but then win a penalty shootout 14-13 on the Sunday. It wasn’t quite as positive for the men with the Lions winning the two encounters 11-4 and 18-7. [Read more…]

Frustrated Naroska hopes Torpedoes show some spark

TAKING on the role as coach of the UWA Torpedoes men after retiring following his glittering playing career has certainly had more challenges than Florian Naroska might have envisioned, but he’s hoping for a strong finish to the Australian Water Polo League season.

Naroska had a stunning playing career that was capped off with his stint with the Torpedoes that including winning the 2016 National Water Polo League title.

On top of that in Germany, he went to the 2008 Olympic Games and represented his nation at five World Championships and four European Championships so it’s fair to say he put together a career most could only dream about in water polo. [Read more…]

Penalty shootout win for Torpedoes women highlights Sydney Uni double

THE UWA Torpedoes heading into a three-week break with a challenging home double-header against the powerful Sydney Uni Lions, but the women’s inspired penalty shootout win on Sunday provided one of the great highlights of 2018.

It was Round 7 of the 2018 Australian Water Polo League with the Torpedoes again hosting a double-header at UWA Aquatic Centre, this time against the visiting Sydney Uni Lions.

It began on Friday night at UWA and in the women’s contest the Lions beat the Torpedoes 13-8. [Read more…]

Big challenge in Round 7 for UWA against Sydney Uni

THE UWA Torpedoes remain at home at UWA Aquatic Centre this weekend to host the Sydney Uni Lions on Friday night and Sunday morning fresh off a confidence-boosting double-header against the Adelaide Jets.

The Torpedoes had their most impressive weekend in the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season back in Round 6 at home to the Adelaide Jets.

The UWA women recorded 15-4 and 12-7 victories over the Jets with the Torpedoes men drawing 8-8 on Thursday night after a penalty shootout before winning 11-8 on Saturday night.

That should provide some good encouragement heading into the Round 7 match ups with the perennially strong Sydney Uni Lions outfits. [Read more…]

Three wins and a draw for UWA against Adelaide

IT was an impressive Round 6 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League for the UWA Torpedoes with the women scoring two wins and the men a draw and a victory against the Adelaide Jets at UWA Aquatic Centre.

It was an important round for both Torpedoes teams as the Jets made the journey west and it ended up being the best weekend of the season for both the UWA sides.

It started on Thursday night at UWA Aquatic Centre with the Torpedoes women coming away with the emphatic 15-4 victory in a supremely impressive performance. The men followed up with their second straight game that went to a penalty shootout, ending up drawing 8-8 with the Adelaide. [Read more…]

Adelaide Jets come to UWA this Thursday, Saturday night

THE UWA Torpedoes remain at UWA Aquatic Centre in Round 6 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League for games against the Adelaide Jets on Thursday and Saturday nights.

For the second straight week, the Torpedoes welcome an interstate visitor for two games in a weekend when the Jets arrive to play on Thursday night from 7pm and then on Saturday night from 6.30pm.

Both Torpedoes teams are desperate to get their second wins of the season on the board while the Jets women arrive searching for their first win of 2018 while the Adelaide men are in good form having won four of six matches to date. [Read more…]

Naroska wants consistency from two-faced Torpedoes

UWA Torpedoes men’s coach Florian Naroska sees his team as one with two faces right now but he hopes they can find a way to perform better for longer moving forward starting this weekend in two games against the Adelaide Jets.

The Torpedoes had their chances to get their second win of the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season on the board last weekend twice at home to the Drummoyne Devils, especially on Sunday ending up losing in a penalty shootout having led 4-2 during the third quarter.

That means that UWA still has just the one win for the season from 10 games making this week’s double at home to the Adelaide Jets on Thursday and Saturday nights all the more critical. [Read more…]

Devils get the better of Torpedoes in four tight affairs

THE first weekend of home double-headers didn’t quite go to plan in Round 5 for the UWA Torpedoes in the OVO Australian Water Polo League with the Drummoyne Devils going away with four victories.

After the opening four rounds of the 2018 season saw the Torpedoes play Fremantle Marlins and Mariners both home and away either side of a six-game, six-day road trip to New South Wales, it was back home to UWA Aquatic Centre in Round 5 for the games against Drummoyne.

It began on Friday night with the Devils women leading the whole game before holding on to win in a tight finish 9-7 over the Torpedoes. Then in the men’s contest, Drummoyne scored the only two goals of the fourth quarter to score the 8-6 victory over UWA. [Read more…]

Torpedoes host Drummoyne Devils this Friday night, Sunday

BOTH UWA Torpedoes teams will look forward to trying to get back to the OVO Australian Water Polo League’s winning list in Round 5 hosting their first interstate visitors but are fully aware it’s not going to be easy against Drummoyne.

The first month of the 2018 AWL season has seen the Torpedoes play games against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at both Bicton Pool and the UWA Aquatic Centre along with taking on a six-game, six-day road trip to New South Wales.

That means that this weekend marks the first time they get to play in their home pool against an interstate opponent as the Drummoyne Devils come to UWA Aquatic Centre to play on Friday night from 7pm and Sunday morning from 10am. [Read more…]
