Torpedoes women lose in penalties; men fall short of Fremantle

THE UWA Torpedoes home opener in the Western Derby on Friday night didn’t quite go to plan with the Fremantle Marlins beating the Torps in a penalty shootout before the Mariners kept their hot form going to open the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season.

The Torpedoes hit the UWA Aquatic Centre pool for the first time in 2018 on Friday night as part of Round 4 of the OVO AWL season after seven road games against Fremantle, the Hunter Hurricanes, UTS Balmain Tigers and UNSW Wests.

It was a welcome sight to be back in the home pool to host Fremantle in the second Western Derby already of 2018, but it didn’t turn out how the Torpedoes would have been hoping. [Read more…]

Torpedoes return home after 6 days of 6 games in NSW

THE UWA Torpedoes have returned home after the most challenging week of the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season following six days of six games in NSW ahead of a home Western Derby this Friday night.

The annual trip to NSW for the six games over the six days is never easy during any season for the Torpedoes and this time around was no different, but now it’s time to look forward to the opening home game this Friday night.

That sees the Torpedoes hosting the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at UWA Aquatic Centre this Friday night from 7pm in an exciting way to begin the 2018 AWL season in our home pool following seven road games to begin proceedings. [Read more…]

Mixed results for Torpedoes in Newcastle v Hurricanes

THE opening two nights of action on the UWA Torpedoes road trip to New South Wales has begun with the women’s scoring a terrific win over the Hunter Hurricanes and then playing out a thrilling draw while it was two tough games for the youthful men’s side.

The Torpedoes OVO Australian Water Polo League began back in Round 1 against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at Bicton Pool, with UWA suffering losses in both the women’s and men’s games.

There was then the bye in Round 2 ahead of the week-long road trip to NSW that began on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with games against the Hunter Hurricanes at Newcastle’s Lambton Pool. [Read more…]

Torpedoes go down to Fremantle Marlins/Mariners in AWL opener

THE 2018 Australian Water Polo League season might have started with losses for the UWA Torpedoes men and women against Fremantle at Bicton Pool, but there were plenty of encouraging signs ahead of the grueling road trip to New South Wales in Round 3.

The new-look AWL season for 2018 got underway on Saturday night at Bicton Pool with a Western Derby as the Torpedoes headed south to tackle the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners.

The end results saw the Marlins win the women’s contest over the Torpedoes to begin proceedings with an 8-4 victory. [Read more…]

Brave Torpedoes NWPL campaign ends in fourth place

DEFENDING National Water Polo League champions the UWA Torpedoes did a tremendous job to get back to the semi finals in 2017 but couldn’t quite bring home a medal from Sydney.

The Torpedoes broke through in stunning fashion during the finals of 2016 winning the club’s first NWPL premiership since entering the competition in 1990.

Backing up was always going to prove a tough ask with the Torpedoes now having a target on their backs throughout 2017, but they did a good job to firstly qualify for finals from fifth position. [Read more…]

Torpedoes advance to semi finals to face Sydney Uni

THE UWA Torpedoes delivered a terrific elimination final performance on Friday to beat the Brisbane Barracudas to set up a semi-final on Saturday with the Sydney University Lions.

The Torpedoes men are the defending National Water Polo League champions and qualified for the 2017 finals in fifth position setting up Friday’s elimination final with the Barracudas at Sydney’s Pymble Ladies College Aquatic Centre.

Despite the Barracudas taking a 6-5 lead into half-time, the Torpedoes responded strongly with the only two goals of the third term including a stunning full-pool bomb from Luke Quinlivan. [Read more…]

Barracudas bite back with Saturday night wins over Torpedoes

THE UWA Torpedoes weren’t quite able to back up Thursday’s double over the Brisbane Barracudas with the visitors returning to claim two National Water Polo League wins on Saturday night.

Thursday was a terrific night for the Torpedoes and likely the highlight double of the season for UWA with both the women’s and men’s teams scoring impressive victories over talented and finals contending Barracudas teams.

Then on Friday night, Brisbane headed to Bicton Pool with the Fremantle Marlins beating the Barracudas 12-10. Meanwhile the Barracudas men beat the Fremantle Mariners 12-10. [Read more…]

Big night for Torpedoes with two wins over Barracudas

IT was likely the best night of the National Water Polo League season on Thursday for the UWA Torpedoes with the women and men scoring impressive victories over the Brisbane Barracudas.

Both Brisbane teams remained in the hunt for the NWPL finals as well as they arrived at UWA Aquatic Centre on Thursday night.

The Barracudas women then scored the first two goals and the Torpedoes had to find something. But they did and put together what is likely the best of their six wins now for the season to end up winning 10-6.

It was then time for the defending champion Torpedoes men to hit the pool looking to make up for the two tough losses to the UNSW Wests Magpies a week earlier. [Read more…]

Wests again claim double against Torpedoes at UWA

THE UWA Torpedoes fought on bravely after a slow start against the UNSW Wests Killer Whales on Sunday before the defending champion men lost in a dramatic thriller against the Magpies at UWA Aquatic Centre.

The University of NSW Wests teams both won over the Torpedoes on Friday night, leaving UWA to look for a measure of revenge on Sunday.

The Killer Whales were boosted by a second penalty goal win over the Fremantle Marlins heading into the Sunday morning clash, and started on fire with five first quarter goals. The Torpedoes fought on bravely from there but Wests ended up winning 17-8.

Then in the men’s clash, the Torpedoes scored first in the last quarter with scores tied heading into the final minute, but the Magpies managed to score after both coaches were ejected for the tense 9-8 victory. [Read more…]

Double blow for Torpedoes at hands of Wests at UWA

FOR the first time in the 2017 National Water Polo League season the UWA Torpedoes have lost both games on the same night at UWA Aquatic Centre both the women and men going down to UNSW Wests on Friday night.

The action began with the women’s contest and the University of NSW Killer Whales proved too strong for the young Torpedoes, running out 13-2 winners.

The defending champion Torpedoes men had won all six of their home matches to date this season, but that changed on Friday night with the UNSW Wests Magpies coming out victorious 10-7. [Read more…]
