Big Torpedoes wins against Sharks

NO week-long trip to New South Wales any season is uneventful and after a false start on Friday, the UWA Torpedoes were back in action on Saturday with both the women and men’s teams recording impressive victories over the Cronulla Sharks.

The Torpedoes’ 2019 OVO Australian Water Polo League season began back on Tuesday with a couple of competitive shows, albeit defeats, at the hands of the Sydney University Lions.

The Torps women then forced the Drummoyne Devils to a penalty shootout on Wednesday night before a narrow loss with the UWA men also coming up short at Drummoyne Swimming Pool.

The fortunate on the road of the Torpedoes changed on Thursday night, though, with a penalty shootout win for the women against the Cronulla Sharks before the men also got on a roll to record their first win of 2019.

The Sydney weather took charge on Friday night with thunderstorms forcing the cancellation of both games against the Devils at Drummoyne Swimming Pool.

But the Torpedoes were back in action on Saturday at Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre and it was two more wins against the Cronulla Sharks.

Following the cancellation of the games against Drummoyne on Friday but coming off wins against Cronulla on Thursday, the Torpedoes women played out a tight battle with the Sharks on Saturday.

The Torpedoes women started well with goals to Dayna O’Leary and Madi Rigo in the first quarter but Cronulla hit back with three goals to one in the second period to lead 4-3 at half-time.

The Sharks then scored the only goal of the third quarter to be on top 5-3, but the Torpedoes rose a gear in the final term scoring the only three goals through Raney Remme, Tayla Walsh and Pippa Pedley to come away with the 6-5 victory.

It was then time for the men’s contest and it was Cronulla who started brightly with four goals to two in the opening quarter.

But it was a massive second period from UWA as they turned on some stunning water polo to pile on seven goals to head into half-time leading 9-5.

The Torpedoes continued their momentum after the change of ends with five more goals in the third quarter before going on to win the game 16-10.

Nick Hughes hit seven goals for UWA, Gaelan Patterson three, Devon Thumwood three and Matt Murphy two.

The Torpedoes now complete the NSW road trip against the Sydney Uni Lions on Sunday.
