UWA’s Sydney road trip ends with losses to Cronulla

THE UWA Torpedoes’ difficult six-game, six-day road trip to Sydney that coincided with a scorching heatwave ended on Sunday with losses at the hands of the Cronulla Sharks.

The Torpedoes undertook the most challenging week of any National Water Polo League season heading to Sydney for the six games in six days before now returning to Perth to play the last 11 matches of the campaign at UWA Aquatic Centre.

On Sunday at Sutherland Leisure Centre, the Cronulla Sharks women beat the UWA Torpedoes 15-1 before the home team also defeated the visitors in the men’s contest 7-5.

Starting with the women’s contest at Sutherland Leisure Centre, the Torpedoes women were looking to end the Sydney trip on a high but it wasn’t to be.

It took just over three minutes for the Sharks to score the opening three goals courtesy of Kiara Holden, Bethaney Clarke and Holly Lincoln-Smith forcing UWA coach Scott Schweickle into an early timeout.

It did stem the tide with Cronulla scoring just the one more goal for the first quarter before adding another through Abbey Freeman 41 seconds into the second term.

The Torpedoes then got on the board courtesy of Madi Rigo but that’s where the scoring would end in the Sydney heat for the visitors.

The Sharks scored another four goals in the half to lead 9-1 by quarter-time. Cronulla added just the one in the third quarter but then scored the only five of the fourth to end up winning 15-1.

The results sees the Torpedoes women come home winless from their six games in Sydney this week and on a seven-game losing run since winning the opening four matches of the NWPL season against the Adelaide Jets and Barbarians.

Then in the men’s contest, it was also Cronulla scoring the opening two goals before the Torpedoes called a timeout with 47 seconds remaining in the term.

They couldn’t come out of that and score but UWA did score first in the second quarter thanks to Andrew Ford.

Captain Nick Hughes then levelled the scores when he scored a penalty less than a minute later before the Torpedoes took the lead midway through the second term with another goal to Ford.

The Sharks managed to level things up at 3-3 at half-time following a goal Nic Brooks setting up a tantalising second half.

Cronulla scored first courtesy of Joe Kayes before UWA again squared things up at 4-4 with a goal to Ford with the advantage of the extra man. The Sharks responded through Ben Matthews to lead 5-4 at three quarter-time.

That became 6-4 with the first goal of the last quarter before a reply for the Torpedoes to Jed Thompson. But the Sharks held on and scored again through Nick Willett to claim the 7-5 victory.

Ford ended up with three goals for the Torpedoes.

The result sees the Torpedoes finish the week-long trip to Sydney with two wins and four losses. That takes the defending NWPL premiers to a record of seven wins and four losses on the season before heading home for the final 11 games.

The UWA Torpedoes will now play their last 11 games of the NWPL season at UWA Aquatic Centre starting on Thursday February 23 against the UTS Balmain Tigers.
