Torps finish Brisbane trip with penalty shootout triumphs

IT was an eventful trip to Brisbane for the UWA Torpedoes in Round 9 of the OVO Australian Water Polo League culminating in both the women and men’s teams winning on Sunday in penalty shootouts against the Brisbane Barracudas.

Following the three-week break during the middle of the 2018 OVO AWL season, the Torpedoes returned to action in Round 10 of the competition by making the trip to Brisbane to play the four games across four days at Fortitude Valley Pool.

The road trip began on Thursday night against the Queensland Breakers. The Torpedoes women went down with the Breakers prevailing 13-9 before the UWA won a nail-bitter, winning 8-7.

It was then up against the Brisbane Barracudas on Friday night with the home team winning the women’s clash 9-7 before the UWA men prevailed 11-6 against the Barracudas.

Then on Saturday night it was against the Breakers once more and it was another narrow loss for the Torpedoes women, with the Breakers winning 8-7. UWA then lost their only men’s game on the trip, with the Breakers prevailing 9-4.

Sunday then ended the road trip with two penalty shootouts with the Torpedoes winning both over the Barracudas. The women won 7-5 to begin proceedings before the men backed that up with the 12-10 victory.

The road trip began on Thursday night with the Torpedoes straight off the plane to take on the Breakers.

The Breakers opened the contest with the only two goals of the first quarter and they went on to lead 5-1 at the half. That became 9-1 midway through the third before a spirited fightback from the Torpedoes.

They ended up just falling four goals short with Michelle Martinelli scoring three goals, Jakie Kohli two, Tayla Walsh two and Claire Whitaker two.

Alice Williams scored three goals for the Breakers.

Then in the men’s clash afterwards, the Torpedoes came away with the thrilling one-goal victory holding off the Breakers having led most of the way.

Kevin Oliveira and Henry Brown scored two goals apiece for the Torpedoes while Bastion Schmellenkamp hit three goals for the Breakers.

It was then the battles with the Barracudas on Friday night. It was another competitive effort by the UWA women but they ended up falling two goals short.

Michelle Martinelli scored three goals for the Torpedoes women and Jakie Kohli two. Zoe Balmanno scored three times for the Barras.

The men continued their winning start to the trip, though, with a strong five-goal victory over the Barracudas.

Scores were tied at quarter-time but UWA then hit the only three goals of the second quarter. The Torpedoes still led by three at three quarter-time and went on to win the game by five.

Tim Putt and Andrew Ford scored three goals each for the Torpedoes, Kevin Oliveira two and Kenta Araki. Billy Miller scored three goals for the Barracudas.

The Torpedoes then came up against the Breakers again on Saturday night with yet another heartbreaking loss for the UWA women, with the home team winning by a solitary goal.

Michelle Martinelli scored another three goals for UWA and Jakie Kohli two.

The Torpedoes men then lost their only clash of the road trip on Saturday night with the Breakers winning by five goals.

And on Sunday against the Barracudas, it started with the women’s contest that was a tight affair the whole way.

It was 1-1 at quarter-time, still 1-1 at half-time and 4-4 by three quarter-time before things finished at the end of regulation tied at 4-4.

The Torpedoes women delivered a tremendous penalty shootout, though, with Michelle Martinelli, Pippa Pedley and Claire Whitaker all scoring while Claire Durston was only beaten once in goals for UWA.

It was a similar story in the men’s battle with that going to a penalty shootout as well when scores were level at 8-8.

The Torpedoes prevailed in the penalty shootout with goals to Nick Hughes, Kevin Oliveira and Matthew Gibb.
