Torpedoes return home after 6 days of 6 games in NSW

THE UWA Torpedoes have returned home after the most challenging week of the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season following six days of six games in NSW ahead of a home Western Derby this Friday night.

The annual trip to NSW for the six games over the six days is never easy during any season for the Torpedoes and this time around was no different, but now it’s time to look forward to the opening home game this Friday night.

That sees the Torpedoes hosting the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at UWA Aquatic Centre this Friday night from 7pm in an exciting way to begin the 2018 AWL season in our home pool following seven road games to begin proceedings.

NOTHING BUT ENCOURAGING SIGNS FOR TORPEDOES WOMEN

The trip began with two games in Newcastle that saw the Torpedoes women win on Tuesday 10-7 over the Hunter Hurricanes, before a stunning 10-10 draw the next day following a penalty shootout.

The men lost their two games to Hunter with the Hurricanes winning 9-5 on Tuesday and 12-2 on Wednesday.

The team then travelled to Sydney for the next four days starting against the UTS Balmain Tigers on Thursday. That saw the Tigers beat the Torpedoes women 10-7 but the UWA men got their first win of 2018, beating Balmain 10-9 in a tremendous contest.

On Friday the Torpedoes faced UNSW Wests and in the women’s contest, it was the Killer Whales winning another tight contest 6-5. Not much separated the teams in the men’s game either, but in the end it was the Magpies beating the Torpedoes 10-7.

On Saturday, the Torpedoes came up against the UTS Balmain Tigers again this time at Dawn Fraser Baths. Balmain prevailed in the women’s game 6-4 and then 5-4 in the men’s.

The trip finished on Sunday against UNSW Wests at Ashfield Aquatic Centre with the Killer Whales women beating the Torpedoes 7-5 and then the Magpies men defeating UWA 9-6.

In the end, the Torpedoes women finished with one win, a draw and four losses from the road trip. A significant improvement on the six losses on the trip in 2017.

The men took out the one victory and five losses.

But it’s back home for the Torpedoes now starting with a clash with the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners on Friday night at UWA Aquatic Centre.
