Torpedoes men score thrilling win in penalty shootout

THE UWA Torpedoes men returned to the winner’s list in the National Water Polo League in a thriller that went to the penalty shootout against the Sydney University Lions on Saturday.

It was the second time the Torpedoes have headed to Peter Montgomery Pool this week as part of the Sydney road trip.

Saturday’s action got underway with the women’s contest and that saw the Sydney Uni Lions beat the Torpedoes 17-5.

Then in the men’s clash, the two teams couldn’t be separated after four quarters with scores locked away at 8-8.

It went to a penalty shootout where Luke Quinlivan saved two shots from the Lions as the Torpedoes won the shootout 4-3 to take the game and return to the winner’s list following three straight defeats.

Saturday’s action in the scorching Sydney heat got underway with the women’s contest with the Torpedoes looking for revenge on Wednesday and to put an end to a five-game losing run.

It wasn’t to be, though, with Sydney Uni scoring the opening three goals in just over three minutes to start the contest.

The Torpedoes did hit back immediately with two quick goals to Madi Rigo, but again the Lions scored just before quarter-time to lead 4-2.

Their advantage had grown to 8-3 to start the third quarter before UWA picked up a third goal of the game, this time thanks to Alex Hughes three minutes into the third term.

Rebecca Liddle did add another just before three quarter-time for the Torpedoes with Dayna O’Leary also scoring in the fourth period but the Lions went on to win 17-5.

It was then onto the men’s contest with the defending premier Torpedoes looking to get back to winning following losses to Sydney University, Cronulla and Drummoyne following a six-game winning run to start the season.

It took only 37 seconds for the Lions to open the scoring thanks to Goran Tomasevic before the Torpedoes answered courtesy of Andrew Ford. But Sydney Uni led after one following a goal to Tomasevic again.

The Lions then opened a 3-1 advantage early in the second quarter before UWA answered through Lach Pethick. But the home team led 4-2 at half-time.

That lead grew to 5-2 to start the second half before the Torpedoes managed two goals in under a minute, both scored by Tom Beare.

UWA then replied to a Sydney Uni goal through Florian Naroska with the Lions lead 6-5 at three quarter-time.

The Torpedoes drew level to start the fourth term when Naroska scored again. Sydney Uni scored next to lead 7-6 before UWA answered through Alex Bogunovich.

The Torpedoes were able to take the lead soon after when Pethick scored with the advantage of the extra man.

That lead lasted just 25 seconds before the Lions drew level again through Tomasevic and that’s where the score stayed after full-time.

Pethick, Naroska and Beare all scored twice inside regular time for the Torpedoes.

In the penalty shootout, Quinlivan was outstanding for the Torpedoes making two saves while Pethick, Nick Hughes, Andrew Ford and Beare all scored for UWA to secure the victory.

The UWA Torpedoes’ Sydney road trip will wrap up on Sunday against the Cronulla Sharks and Sutherland Leisure Centre.
