Torpedoes finish season with double against Sharks

THE UWA Torpedoes return home to UWA Aquatic Centre for the first time in over a month for a double-header in Round 10 against the Cronulla Sharks to conclude the 2018 OVO Australia Water Polo League season.

Following the break in the competition, the Torpedoes returned to action in the 2018 OVO AWL last week for the road trip to Brisbane.

That saw the UWA women win one of the four games combined against the Queensland Breakers and Brisbane Barracudas. It was the opposite for the Torpedoes men who won three of their four encounters against the Breakers and Barracudas.

Now the Torpedoes are back in their home pool for the final team in Round 10 for a double-header against the Cronulla Sharks.

That begins on Thursday night with the women’s clash at 7pm and the men’s match at 8.30pm.

The two teams will be then back again on Saturday night with the women’s match starting at 6.30pm and the men’s at 8pm.

Coming into the Round 10 match ups, the Torpedoes women sit in 11th position in the AWL standings but their record of five wins, one draw and 12 losses don’t tell the whole story.

The UWA women’s season could have so easily been different had it not been for the string of tight losses, including three of the four last week in Brisbane.

Highlighting the Torpedoes’ competitiveness is the fact that they have scored 145 goals on the season which is fourth best in the competition only behind the top three teams the UNSW Wests Killer Whales, Drummoyne Devils and Sydney University Lions.

They have conceded 151 goals too which is the second most only better than the winless Adelaide Jets. But the six-goal difference for and against shows how strongly they have been able to compete.

The Sharks women come into the weekend in sixth position on the standings with eight wins and six losses, and needing to take plenty of wins home with them if they hope to retain their finals position.

Meanwhile, the Torpedoes men enter Round 10 in eighth positions after winning three of four games last week in Brisbane. UWA has a record of five wins, a draw and 12 losses entering the matches with the Sharks.

The Torpedoes might not be able to reach finals but they will be desperate to finish off a disappointing season with a couple more wins.

The Sharks men come west in fifth position with nine wins, a draw and four losses as they need to keep winning to try and finish as high in the standings as they can.
