Torpedoes fall to Sharks as part of Sydney road trip

THE UWA Torpedoes difficult road trip to Sydney continued on Thursday night with the men’s and women’s teams coming up short against the Cronulla Sharks.

The Torpedoes took on the Sharks at Sutherland Leisure Centre in the third of six games on the road in Sydney this week, but it didn’t prove a night to remember for the visitors.

The women’s contest started proceedings with the Sharks beating the Torpedoes 13-3 before in the men’s affair, it was again Cronulla winning 12-5 over UWA.

Starting with the women’s contest, the Torpedoes were attempting to hit back after losses to start the Sydney road trip against the Drummoyne Devils and Sydney University Lions.

But it was the Sharks who started strongly with the game’s first three goals courtesy of two to Brittany Tait and another to Bethaney Clarke. UWA did get on the board just before quarter-time thanks to Madi Rigo.

It was all Cronulla in the second quarter with the home team scoring the only four goals to end up leading 7-1 at half-time.

The Sharks then stretched their advantage to 11-1 as they hit the opening four goals of the third quarter before the Torpedoes managed their second score of the game when Cathryn Earl found the net.

The Torpedoes did add a third goal in the fourth term courtesy of Vesselina Velikova as well but the Sharks still proved too strong winning 13-3.

The loss sees the Torpedoes women slip to a 4-4 record season having started with two wins each against the Adelaide Jets and Barbarians, but they have since lost to the Fremantle Marlins along with Drummoyne, Sydney Uni and now Cronulla.

It was then time for the men’s contest at Sutherland with the Torpedoes looking to bounce back from their first loss of the season at the hands of Sydney Uni on Wednesday night.

But that task looked insurmountable when the Sharks scored the opening five goals on Thursday.

It took until midway through the second quarter for UWA to score and that came with a goal courtesy of Florian Naroska with the advantage of the extra man.

Then with just a second left in the half, the Torpedoes scored again through Brett McGhie with the Sharks leading 6-2 at the half-time break.

A UWA goal from Nick Hughes immediately saw the Torpedoes respond to a Sharks goal to start the second half before an Andrew Ford goal later in the term kept the visitors just in touch.

But Cronulla managed to open up an 11-4 lead by three quarter-time before going on to win 13-5.

Naroska scored two goals for the Torpedoes with one each to Ford, McGhie and Hughes.

The Torpedoes continue their road trip to Sydney on Friday night returning to Drummoyne Swimming Pool to take on the Drummoyne Devils.
