New AWL season begins as Torpedoes tackle Fremantle at Bicton

IT is a new-look national competition for 2018 with Water Polo Australia revamping the league into the Australian Water Polo League and the season for the UWA Torpedoes begins on Saturday February 3 against Fremantle at Bicton Pool.

Water Polo Australia undertook a review of the National Water Polo League following the 2017 season and the end result has been a rebranding into the Australian Water Polo League.

That has led to a slightly later start to the season as well with proceedings getting underway on the first weekend in February.

For the UWA Torpedoes men and women, that means a Western Derby battle on Saturday night at Bicton Pool. The women’s encounter against the Fremantle Marlins begins at 6.30pm while the men’s battle against the Mariners starts at 8pm. [Read more…]

UWA Torpedoes squads for 2018 AWL season

WITH the 2018 Australian Water Polo League season getting underway this Saturday night for the UWA Torpedoes, it’s a chance to look at the men’s and women’s squads assembled for the new-look competition.

The 2017 National Water Polo League season again saw the Torpedoes men reach the finals but it proved the end of an era with the retirements of Luke Quinlivan, Brett McGhie and Florian Naroska.

Naroska has now moved into the head coach role replacing Andrei Kovalenko while Quinlivan is one of his assistant coaches along with Brent Thompson.

That makes for a new-look men’s team for the Torpedoes in 2018 while the women’s team has been able to keep much of the group together that went through a development season in 2017 with Scott Schweickle in his first season as coach. [Read more…]
