Torpedoes host Drummoyne Devils this Friday night, Sunday

BOTH UWA Torpedoes teams will look forward to trying to get back to the OVO Australian Water Polo League’s winning list in Round 5 hosting their first interstate visitors but are fully aware it’s not going to be easy against Drummoyne.

The first month of the 2018 AWL season has seen the Torpedoes play games against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at both Bicton Pool and the UWA Aquatic Centre along with taking on a six-game, six-day road trip to New South Wales.

That means that this weekend marks the first time they get to play in their home pool against an interstate opponent as the Drummoyne Devils come to UWA Aquatic Centre to play on Friday night from 7pm and Sunday morning from 10am. [Read more…]

Torpedoes women look to start building momentum at home

THE UWA Torpedoes women have shown strong improvement so far in the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League with coach Scott Schweickle looking for them to better capitalise on their good work this weekend at home to the Drummoyne Devils.

The Torpedoes women have played well so far this season but ultimately have just the one win and a draw to show from it out of eight games including two losses to the Fremantle Marlins either side of the six-game NSW road trip where they won one game, drew one and lost four.

That means that the stage is set for an important double-header this weekend against Drummoyne at UWA Aquatic Centre firstly on Friday night from 7pm and then Sunday morning from 10am. [Read more…]

Torpedoes women lose in penalties; men fall short of Fremantle

THE UWA Torpedoes home opener in the Western Derby on Friday night didn’t quite go to plan with the Fremantle Marlins beating the Torps in a penalty shootout before the Mariners kept their hot form going to open the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season.

The Torpedoes hit the UWA Aquatic Centre pool for the first time in 2018 on Friday night as part of Round 4 of the OVO AWL season after seven road games against Fremantle, the Hunter Hurricanes, UTS Balmain Tigers and UNSW Wests.

It was a welcome sight to be back in the home pool to host Fremantle in the second Western Derby already of 2018, but it didn’t turn out how the Torpedoes would have been hoping. [Read more…]

Torpedoes hit UWA pool for first time in 2018 against Fremantle

FOLLOWING seven road games already in the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season, the UWA Torpedoes hit their home pool at UWA Aquatic Centre on Friday night to host the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners.

The Torpedoes season began back in the opening round with games against Fremantle at Bicton Pool.

On that night, it was wins for both the Marlins and Mariners over UWA but there some encouraging signs to take into last week’s six-game, six-day road trip to Newcastle and Sydney. [Read more…]

Pleasing development continuing for Torpedoes women

UWA Torpedoes women’s coach Scott Schweickle was proud of his team’s performance on the gruelling six-game, six-day NSW road trip and he’s looking forward to them building on that now starting in their home pool.

The Torpedoes started off the road trip impressively in Newcastle last Tuesday beating the Hunter Hurricanes 10-7 before then playing out a 10-10 draw the next day with the two teams unable to be separated after a penalty shootout.

While the Torpedoes lost the four games in Sydney from Thursday to Sunday against both the UTS Balmain Tigers and UNSW Wests Killer Whales, the averaging losing margin was just two goals. [Read more…]

Torpedoes return home after 6 days of 6 games in NSW

THE UWA Torpedoes have returned home after the most challenging week of the 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League season following six days of six games in NSW ahead of a home Western Derby this Friday night.

The annual trip to NSW for the six games over the six days is never easy during any season for the Torpedoes and this time around was no different, but now it’s time to look forward to the opening home game this Friday night.

That sees the Torpedoes hosting the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at UWA Aquatic Centre this Friday night from 7pm in an exciting way to begin the 2018 AWL season in our home pool following seven road games to begin proceedings. [Read more…]

Mixed results for Torpedoes in Newcastle v Hurricanes

THE opening two nights of action on the UWA Torpedoes road trip to New South Wales has begun with the women’s scoring a terrific win over the Hunter Hurricanes and then playing out a thrilling draw while it was two tough games for the youthful men’s side.

The Torpedoes OVO Australian Water Polo League began back in Round 1 against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at Bicton Pool, with UWA suffering losses in both the women’s and men’s games.

There was then the bye in Round 2 ahead of the week-long road trip to NSW that began on Tuesday and Wednesday this week with games against the Hunter Hurricanes at Newcastle’s Lambton Pool. [Read more…]

Round 3 Preview – NSW road trip

BUSINESS really picks up for the UWA Torpedoes in the OVO Australian Water Polo League in Round 3 with six games in six days in New South Wales starting against the Hunter Hurricanes in Newcastle on Tuesday February 13.

The Torpedoes 2018 AWL season began a fortnight ago against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners at Bicton Pool. Now after the weekend off in Round 2, it’s time for the annual remarkably gruelling road trip to NSW.

It all gets underway on Tuesday and Wednesday in Newcastle against the Hurricanes. The Torpedoes then head to Sydney and over the next four days split their games against the UTS Balmain Tigers and UNSW Wests Killer Whales and Magpies. [Read more…]

Nothing but encouraging signs for Torpedoes women

UWA Torpedoes women’s coach Scott Schweickle liked the signs he saw in Round 1 of 2018 OVO Australian Water Polo League and is looking forward to a vastly improved team this season led by imports Michelle Martinelli, Alyssa Diacono and Jakie Kohli.

It was Schweickle’s first season in charge of the women’s Torpedoes in 2017 having made the move west and it was very much one of development and finding out which players he would persevere with moving forward, and giving chances to some young players.

The likes of Madi Rigo, Pippa Pedley and Riley Davidson benefited greatly from that experience and then look set to improve even further in 2018 along with the arrival of another exciting young player Glenda Morgan. [Read more…]

Torpedoes go down to Fremantle Marlins/Mariners in AWL opener

THE 2018 Australian Water Polo League season might have started with losses for the UWA Torpedoes men and women against Fremantle at Bicton Pool, but there were plenty of encouraging signs ahead of the grueling road trip to New South Wales in Round 3.

The new-look AWL season for 2018 got underway on Saturday night at Bicton Pool with a Western Derby as the Torpedoes headed south to tackle the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners.

The end results saw the Marlins win the women’s contest over the Torpedoes to begin proceedings with an 8-4 victory. [Read more…]
