New AWL season begins as Torpedoes tackle Fremantle at Bicton

IT is a new-look national competition for 2018 with Water Polo Australia revamping the league into the Australian Water Polo League and the season for the UWA Torpedoes begins on Saturday February 3 against Fremantle at Bicton Pool.

Water Polo Australia undertook a review of the National Water Polo League following the 2017 season and the end result has been a rebranding into the Australian Water Polo League.

That has led to a slightly later start to the season as well with proceedings getting underway on the first weekend in February.

For the UWA Torpedoes men and women, that means a Western Derby battle on Saturday night at Bicton Pool. The women’s encounter against the Fremantle Marlins begins at 6.30pm while the men’s battle against the Mariners starts at 8pm. [Read more…]

UWA Torpedoes squads for 2018 AWL season

WITH the 2018 Australian Water Polo League season getting underway this Saturday night for the UWA Torpedoes, it’s a chance to look at the men’s and women’s squads assembled for the new-look competition.

The 2017 National Water Polo League season again saw the Torpedoes men reach the finals but it proved the end of an era with the retirements of Luke Quinlivan, Brett McGhie and Florian Naroska.

Naroska has now moved into the head coach role replacing Andrei Kovalenko while Quinlivan is one of his assistant coaches along with Brent Thompson.

That makes for a new-look men’s team for the Torpedoes in 2018 while the women’s team has been able to keep much of the group together that went through a development season in 2017 with Scott Schweickle in his first season as coach. [Read more…]

UWA Torpedoes draw for all new Australian Water Polo League

THE 2018 season of the UWA Torpedoes in the new-look Australian Water Polo League begins this Saturday night in a Western Derby at Bicton Pool.

Water Polo Australia has given the national competition a revamp over the off-season resulting in a rebranding of the league into the all-new Australian Water Polo League, with a new naming rights sponsor on board in the form of Ovo Mobile.

For the UWA Torpedoes women’s and men’s teams in the AWL, the 2018 season all gets underway on Saturday night at Bicton Pool up against the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners. [Read more…]

Brave Torpedoes NWPL campaign ends in fourth place

DEFENDING National Water Polo League champions the UWA Torpedoes did a tremendous job to get back to the semi finals in 2017 but couldn’t quite bring home a medal from Sydney.

The Torpedoes broke through in stunning fashion during the finals of 2016 winning the club’s first NWPL premiership since entering the competition in 1990.

Backing up was always going to prove a tough ask with the Torpedoes now having a target on their backs throughout 2017, but they did a good job to firstly qualify for finals from fifth position. [Read more…]

Torpedoes advance to semi finals to face Sydney Uni

THE UWA Torpedoes delivered a terrific elimination final performance on Friday to beat the Brisbane Barracudas to set up a semi-final on Saturday with the Sydney University Lions.

The Torpedoes men are the defending National Water Polo League champions and qualified for the 2017 finals in fifth position setting up Friday’s elimination final with the Barracudas at Sydney’s Pymble Ladies College Aquatic Centre.

Despite the Barracudas taking a 6-5 lead into half-time, the Torpedoes responded strongly with the only two goals of the third term including a stunning full-pool bomb from Luke Quinlivan. [Read more…]

Two extra goals could lift Torpedoes in finals says Quinlivan

RETIRING UWA Torpedoes champion Luke Quinlivan is proud of the team to qualify again for the National Water Polo League finals again in 2017 despite the adversity and he hopes they can find a couple extra goals a game the next three days in Sydney.

Quinlivan has made the decision that 2017 will be the final season of his remarkable water polo career that was highlighted with the NWPL premiership with the Torpedoes last season, but has included 319 national league games along with being a regular Australian representative.

The 31-year-old will go down as one of the country’s greatest goalkeepers and it’s hard to argue at this point he is the Torpedoes best player in the NWPL as he now prepares for the last weekend of his career. [Read more…]

Torpedoes take on Barracudas in NWPL elimination final

THE National Water Polo League finals begin on Friday in Sydney with the defending champion UWA Torpedoes men needing to beat the Brisbane Barracudas to book a spot in the semi finals.

The 2017 NWPL finals begin at Prymble Ladies College Aquatic Centre on Friday with the Torpedoes beginning their premiership defence by taking on the Barracudas in an elimination final.

Coming off last year’s breakthrough triumph that saw UWA claim its first national league gold medal, the Torpedoes men finished the 2017 season in fifth position with a 15-7 record following last Friday night’s derby victory at UWA Aquatic Centre over the Fremantle Mariners. [Read more…]

Quinny proud of how far Torpedoes have come in his career

THERE is no one player who embodies what the UWA Torpedoes represent than champion goalkeeper Luke Quinlivan and as he approaches the end of his remarkable career, he couldn’t be prouder to have seen the growth in the club.

Quinlivan has now played 318 National Water Polo League matches and there were some tremendously tough times there with the Torpedoes struggling to be competitive in the pool and to have the organisation or infrastructure out of it.

But now as he approaches his final game this Friday night at the UWA Aquatic Centre against the Fremantle Mariners ahead of one last finals series in the national league, Quinlivan can’t help but reflect on pride on how far the Torpedoes have come. [Read more…]

Torpedoes host Fremantle in Western Derby at UWA

THE 2017 National Water Polo League season concludes with a big occasion at UWA Aquatic Centre with the UWA Torpedoes hosting the Fremantle Marlins and Mariners on Friday night.

It’s going to a huge night and celebration of water polo in WA in the final round of the 2017 NWPL season.

It will get underway at 7pm with the women’s contest between the Torpedoes and Fremantle Marlins.

Then at 8.30pm, the men’s contest will begin with the defending champion Torpedoes facing off with the Fremantle Mariners. [Read more…]

Barracudas bite back with Saturday night wins over Torpedoes

THE UWA Torpedoes weren’t quite able to back up Thursday’s double over the Brisbane Barracudas with the visitors returning to claim two National Water Polo League wins on Saturday night.

Thursday was a terrific night for the Torpedoes and likely the highlight double of the season for UWA with both the women’s and men’s teams scoring impressive victories over talented and finals contending Barracudas teams.

Then on Friday night, Brisbane headed to Bicton Pool with the Fremantle Marlins beating the Barracudas 12-10. Meanwhile the Barracudas men beat the Fremantle Mariners 12-10. [Read more…]
